Steel House Number Sign: Plasma Cut 12 Ga, 2.7 mm 7/64″ Hot Rolled Mild Steel
Steel house number sign for my house, long overdue, way better than the typical house number junk my house came with and a great reminder everyday to pay careful attention to nesting!

It’s been over a year now since I moved into my house a few miles from my shop and since that time, I’ve hated the house number I had on it, it’s old fashion and the wood was half rotten, CNCROi.com can do something way better visually and aesthetically!
Before we jump into how my custom steel house number sigh was made, let’s take a look at the old junky one above and compare it to the new one below.
Not only is it bigger but it’s also way easier to read at night, the photos don’t do it much justice but now I’m proud of my custom CNCROi.com produced steel house number sign!

I was inspired for my CNC plasma design from an earlier design I made for a client that lived out in the country that had issues with people finding their house number.
For this job, I decided to go with the tried and true, hot rolled mild steel, 12 Ga, 2.7 mm 7/64″ which is wickedly strong for this application, incredibly durable and endlessly flexible as far as applications go.
Have a massive estate and want something bigger? CNCROi.com makes that too… out of live edge if you wish!

I absolutely love CNC plasma cutting at CNCROi.com, the sparks are just awesome, this machine is a powerful brute and I’ve cut steel manually before, this cuts though it like a molten knive through hot butter, it’s ridiculous how well my CNC plasma cutter cuts through metal of all gauges (thicknesses).
Although I have some stainless steel in the shop, I decided to just use mild steel because my plan was to paint my custom steel house number sign white to match the garage door and other trim around the exterior of my house, no point paying more for metal if it’s going to be covered anyways.
Cedar is a wonderful material for custom house number too, it looks great just about anywhere.

What you don’t see in the video is that when I’m CNC plasma cutting steel and metal of all types, I’m actually wearing my welding helmet and am completely covered, this machine will give you a Sun burn in the middle of winter in no time.
I’m still very much getting use to photography regarding the plasma cutting process, some shots come out great, some not so much, but when it comes to CNC plasma cutting steel house number signs, your design options are limitless, any design, font, size or thickness of material you want, CNCROi.com can produce just for you!
It’s a lot of fun CNC plasma cutting, and metal working in general, it’s a nice break from all the wood and plastics I process at CNCROi.com for customers all around North America.
When it comes to custom cottage signs, CNCROi.com makes those too, any mix and match of materials and design options work for us!

As for as accuracy and precision is involved, CNCROi.com‘s plasma cutter is just as good as our Austrian laser or American CNC routers or waterjet, it’s just a different tool that has it’s place among the CNC giants in our shop.
I have a powerful extraction system in the shop for the CNC plasma cutter but this job produced a lot of molten steel and there was a cloud forming above the work area which you can see happening during the cutting process of this custom steel house number sign as the video progressed.
The nice thing about using a CNC machine to produce steel house number signs is the speed, nothing comes close to it equipment wise I have in the shop, I also have a manual plasma cutter but then I’d have to make CNC router or laser jigs then follow-through with a hand-held torch, very slow and no way as accurate or a nice quality finish as my CNC plasma cutter.
When it comes to huge live edge house number and cottage signs, CNCROi.com can make them too, they are always great fun to make.

After cutting the sign, I left a little room so that the inside 5s that are scrap stayed in place, it was time to review the work, notice no dross on the sign itself and on the underside, it’s even cleaner.
This custom steel house number sign I made does have mill scale on it though, this needs to be removed for proper paint adhesion, it’s a small detail but this assures that I don’t have it flaking away over time.
An angle grinder is the tool of choice when it comes to removing the mill scale from this steel house number sign, you can see the difference, it goes from a dull to a shiny finish, that would start to rust pretty quickly if I didn’t seal it using paint on one side and clear coat on the other.
If I were to weld this custom steel house number sign, this is also the point that I’d be doing it, and then applying paint, in this case, as mentioned, it was to be the color white to match my house.
Do you prefer a wooden house number sign? CNCROi.com makes those too!

Here’s the before picture, the 55 looks great like this, if this was a stainless steel house number sign, then this is pretty much the same finish you’d see but I’d make it a little nicer as paint wouldn’t be covering it.
And after, the white paint completely transforms this steel house number sign, I never get tired of using the power of paint to make nice things at CNCROi.com for my customers.
CNCROi.com can be as creative as you want to be, from dimensional to full solid signage.

A few coats of enamel paint, nothing fancy, with a clear coat front and back and you get a wonderful shine.
You can see the great visibility of this sign, down the line, maybe I’ll create an offset to this sign with a solid backing for better contrast but I really like how this came out.
