Wedding Pyrography: Engraved Pine Plaque
Wedding pyrography is a wonderful way to remember a special moment in time, although CNCROi.com can do this across many different types of materials from wood through steel, today we’ll do it on Pine.
For this custom wedding pyrography Pine plaque, we used our Austrian CNC laser, though we could do this using other equipment in the shop, the scale of this job and the effect the customer was looking for best suited our industrial laser.
When it comes to wedding pyrography, a very good image to start with helps a lot, you want there to be enough detail in the picture so that the couple’s face can be clearly seen and enough shadows and contrasting colors around the face to accentuate the details in the face.
We’ve made projects bit and small for weddings, from huge live edge Walnut slabs to smaller Basswood and other wood species “things” for wedding table number stands and reception signage of all types
CNCROi.com has done a lot of laser pyrography, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and even for corporate events.
From all the experience that CNCROi.com has accumulated through the years regarding laser pyrography, the biggest challenge is optimizing the photo to come out awesome on the base material, in this case, we lucked out because the photographer took an amazing picture for us to make the optimizations from which helped tremendously.
It’s really fun doing wood pyrography, I often take pictures and then try to find out how to best optimize them for just such a purpose and the results are always different as wood always has different densities and reactions to the heat of our laser.
Washed-out images, especially involving wedding pyrography, makes it quite a bit more challenging at our end to make the photo pop properly so that when it’s laser engraved onto wood, the details and 3D effect CNCROi.com strives for, comes out great.
I really enjoy pyrography onto wood, it’s quite an art into itself, too much detail and the photo is forgettable and not enough and you just can’t make out what the photo is about.
For wedding pyrography, we are looking for just enough detail in our optimized files generated from your photo to make the details that are important in the photo shine while not making it overly distracting, meaning your eye focuses on the details rather than the sentiment.
CNCROi.com can use any type of wood to perform wood pyrography onto, in this case, this custom “The World Is Mine” plaque was made using Pine reclaimed from a wood pallet!
What I also enjoy about wedding pyrography is that it gives us a chance to create a 3D relief that really doesn’t photograph well (it looks flat which it isn’t), this means when you run your fingers over it, you feel details that aren’t visible to the naked eye right away, again, lots of practice has gotten CNCROi.com to this point of expertise.
The photo you see being laser engraved a second time smooths things out a bit, adds more 3D relief but most importantly, adds contrast to the overall image, of course the people in this wedding pyrography looks sun burned but that’s just all the smoke we’ve generated engraving across multiple layers into this piece of Pine coming to settle on the masking.
Wood is actually a quite challenging medium compared to plastics or even metals due to the grain, knots and variations in wood density not only across the plaque but through the wedding pyrography plaque, no two spots react the same and this must be accounted for.
CNCROi.com can also perform wonders on other types of wood from live edge Basswood through to Walnut, Oak and even Mahogany.
After CNCROi.com‘s laser is finished engraving the entire wedding pyrography out, it’s time to cut it from the Pine.
There is FIRE and BURNING throughout this process, which is why a sander is very important to clean the entire wedding pyrography up after it’s been laser engraved and cut.
Of course, this custom Pine plaque is not finished, the wedding vows were added to the back, it was a great idea by the customer and I’m happy they brought it up as it only increases the sentimental value of the overall piece CNCROi.com is making on their behalf.
Thanks to our diversified equipment base, we can also do very unique plaques using metals and even overlay them onto wood or the other way around, your options with CNCROi.com are truly endless!
As CNCROi.com masked both the front and the back, we can just flip the board over and engrave the wedding vowes right into the wedding pyrography.
As we aren’t going very deep, there is no chance short of a massive drop in material density, of the engraving on one side hitting the engraving on the opposite side.
How does CNCROi.com sand our woodworking work? We use our custom laser cut downdraft table that’s been exceptionally useful through the years in our shop as we grow.
Our custom downdraft table also evolves with the times, and doubles as a fantastic welding platform too!
This is 3/4″ or 18 mm thick Pine, so it has some nice thickness and heft to it.
Above are what the wedding vows look like on the backside of the pine straight from the laser and below is what it looks like after it has been cleaned-up.
The same transformation will occur on the wedding pyrography on the front of the Pine plaque, but the transformation will be all the more extreme.
It’s a very fine line between sanding too much and sanding too little, you want the details in the photo engraved onto the wood to stand out but not wash it too much out by sanding too deeply but then again, if you don’t sand enough, then you end-up with a custom wedding pyrography that looks too busy.
