What do financial planners and brokers do?
Basically, they help manage or protect your wealth from stocks to property and they generally work on either a retainer, percentage of holdings or a combination of the two. The good ones make money for their clients and keep a percentage of the uptake in value.
An extreme example of how lucrative a very successful financial planner can be would be the ones who represent stars, they keep up to 5% of the proceeds that can easily add-up to millions of yearly income from one client alone in royalties from licensing their likeness to products like tooth brushes through clothing. Others focus on keeping your tax rates low using tax shelters and the like.

Like it or not, I can point-out a person from the financial industry at most networking events from across the room. It’s easy, they generally wear the best looking suits in the room, hang around one another in closed groups and don’t wear name tags!
I know I’m generalizing but you get the point, they are networking to find high net-worth individuals (generally not found at networking events) but already have the suits and mannerisms so they persist. I once attended a networking event in Toronto where literally half the room were from the financial industry!

Finances is very much a dog eat dog world, you are only as good as your last trade and have to live off residual income as assets are very easily transferable to the next guy or gal who convinces a high net worth individual to flip to them.
There is a percentage of bleed each year from poaching which must be replaced in order to maintain a respectable livelihood and being part of a bank or large institution is still no guarantee of success. It comes down to results and your own personal branding as they jump from one company to the next, representing their services.

I enjoy meeting-up with financial planners at networking events because it’s basically a free consultation that would have otherwise cost me money to be educated about! Of course, knowledge goes both ways so I open their eyes at the possibilities we can offer them as well.
Although we’ve been known to spice-up offices with large quotes out of wood and acrylic and promotional Corian wall plaques, we’ve also helped some financial types with broadening their image so that they stand-out.
From stainless steel business cards (only give to GOOD clients, the rest get traditional paper) to custom gifts to celebrate a huge milestone with a client, these small things add value in the way of appreciation and put you right back in the client’s mind when ever they get them.

If you are running a successful insurance brokerage and one of your employees has just hit their 100th client, don’t give them a paper wall plaque saying “congrats!”, show them something more worthy of their accomplishment that they will keep even if they move to another brokerage or start their own. Maybe you don’t have money to fly them and their family to Paris for a week but if they are an avid fisherman, let’s make that wall plaque in the shape of a fish using hardwood and stick their picture on it along with their accomplishment!
Appreciation goes both ways!
If you visit a lot of offices, you will begin noticing the “sameness” that they seem to have. You know, those small crystal trophies that are given for employee recognition that even the employees see as being worthless and disposable through to the other small novelty items. As an employer, you cannot afford to give people trinkets to celebrate their successes or milestones at the company!
So, an employee hits a milestone and you celebrate it with a 10$ award that looks like everybody elses award, how much true appreciation and thought went into that? None.
