Wine Bottle Engraving: Shallow VS Deep Engraving
CNCROi.com will be doing wine bottle engraving today but what’s different is that we’ll review shallow vs deep engraving to create contrast.
We can also transform any material into any shape as well, so here’s a wooden wine bottle we made for a client to hang on their wall.
Wine bottle engraving can be done with just about any image, text and area on the bottle that’s flat.

For these wine bottle engraving demonstrations, it’s necessary to remove the label and clean the glass, although we are engraving into the bottle and really don’t need to do this as a result, paper would be vaporized instantly, removing sticky paper after it has shallows and depths into it is a pain.
Next-up is making the surface, this just makes clean-up way easier and also allows for the opportunity to actually paint fill the bottle engraving, something I’ll do at a later date in another demonstration of wine bottle engraving and branding options.
Quite literally, just about any design you come-up with, or font you wish to use, or position of said graphics and texts can be applied to just about any glass bottle or cylindrical item for that matter.

The fire you see is mostly from the vaporizing of the paper mask, the very bright light you see at the bottom is mostly the glass being shattered and vaporized.

CNC laser engraving glass is a micro-shattering process, we are not engraving into the bottle in a traditional sense, we are shattering our way down into the bottle instead.
It’s like comparing a shovel into dirt (engraving) vs using an ice pick through ice (etching), it’s a flat layered pounding process rather than straight digging.

Our Austrian industrial wide-format laser has absolute precision and accuracy, which means we can pass over the same place endless times to create additional depth, we used the same process but without the rotary for engraving lots of other projects across CNCROi.com‘s blog posts.
Now that the masking is removed, you can see how there is no fire, it’s just a very bright light as, remember, the masking was vaporized on the first pass, there is none on the surface for the second pass.
The light is from the heat of the laser shattering the glass over and over again due to the heat differential, the bottle is “cold” but the laser is “hot” and thus, we are shattering our way through it.
Of course, the same process can be applied to a beer can or anything else made out of aluminium, metal or plastic.
You can now see at another angle how high the brightness flies up from the surface of the bottle, it looks like little mushroom clouds but don’t worry, we aren’t using nukes to engrave these wine bottles.
Now that CNCROi.com is done the engraving process, you can already see a difference between the shallow vs deep engraving into the wine bottle surface.
The depth of the secondary engraving is roughly half a mm, we don’t need to go crazy deep to create a different effect when it comes to wine bottle engraving or branding to achieve the result CNCROi.com was trying to achieve here.
At this stage, if we wanted to, we could paint the surface of the bottle into another color but to be honest, I believe the bottle looks best and durability wise, just as it comes out of the laser (after cleaning) is the most amazing result for gifting.
It never ceases to amaze me at how sharp everything is, contrast that to overspray and underspray issues we’d get doing the same job using our industrial sand blaster, and it just shows you the incredible power our Austrian CNC laser has on so many mediums.
Additionally, we can make matching items, including metal coasters if you wanted to really get fancy!
After the masking is removed, you can clearly see two levels of engraving happening, the deeper the glass engraving, the higher the density of the shattering and yes, when you run your fingers over the surface, you can totally feel the difference in-depth.
It’s hard to photograph the texture as the camera has problems focusing correctly but it feels like sand paper at a very high grit (not too rough that it cuts your finger).
Looking straight-on, you can also see the difference in etching density, this allows for endless design options.
