Custom Acrylic Backlit Signage
Custom acrylic backlit signage involves creating signs or graphics that are lit from behind or along the edge, depending on the effect the customer is after.
This creates a unique look that is eye-catching and attention-grabbing, the process of creating custom acrylic backlit signage typically involves cutting the acrylic using a CNC laser cutting machine (in this case), then attaching lights to the back of the sign, hence the name of this CNCROi.com blog post.
Although not the largest sign CNCROi.com has ever made, it was the most interesting one I’ve done using live edge solid wood… check out this video using our old CNC router, which has since been replaced by a massive beast we use in the shop now.
To make custom acrylic backlit signage using a CNC laser cutting machine, CNCROi.com helped the client design and pick a font to complete a digital proof of the sign they wanted to create.
Once the design was approved by the customer (digitally), CNCROi.com imported it into the software for our CNC laser cutting machine, which is then used the laser to cut the acrylic to the desired customer spec.
Corian, or any solid surface material, love to be paint filled, here’s a sign I made for the shop that looks just as fantastic today as it did way back when.
The nice thing about laser cutting acrylic, unlike using our CNC router for the same process, is that the edges are cut and flamed polished in one step rather than two, this saves time, and the customer money.
When this was shipped to the customer, they attached lights to the back of the acrylic, this can be done using a variety of different methods, including LED strips, LED panels, or fluorescent lights.
Lasers can cut signage to any size or shape, so can our router, so there aren’t really any design limitations when it comes to what you’d like to have hanging on your wall or place of business… so use your imagination and go wild!
For custom acrylic backlit signage made by CNCROi.com, something to keep in mind are the inner parts, you’ll see I added bridge material to the letters, even those that didn’t need it, for consistency, this extra bit of detail does add attention to the overall sign, making it less boring.
When choosing the lighting where the color options are endless, it is important to consider the brightness and color temperature of the light, as well as the durability and reliability of the lighting source.
Our CNC router can do dimensional work when it comes to custom signage, of course, this can be backlit, cut through or whatever you want, but adding a 3D effect can really only be done, using one solid piece, with our CNC router… and we have two of them in the shop.

Laser cutting is a process that must be paid attention to when it’s happening as I’m basically using high powered energy to cut through solid gas, as such, a fire that can become uncontrollable is possible at anytime, I’ve done of this for years but always pay attention regardless as to what’s happening.
MDF, metal, plastic, wood, rubber… literally any material can be transformed into a custom sign, backlit or otherwise by CNCROi.com.
All the inside parts of this sign were recycled, the customer only wanted the sign that you see in white acrylic, it looks fantastic!
What I really enjoy about custom signage in general are the endless permutations that are possible, from front to design, size to material, each and every job, backlit or otherwise, is unique to the customer’s needs and wants.
As for this custom acrylic backlit signage, there is a picture that the customer sent to me after installation but for the life of me, I can’t find it – regardless, it looked amazing and keep in mind, backlit signs always look better in a dark room!
