Custom Bathroom Keys: 1/4″ Clear Acrylic

Making custom bathroom keys is a straight forward project, pick your material, choose a design then CNCROi.com fabricates it and ships it right to your door!

For this set of custom bathroom keys, CNCROi.com made them out of quarter inch or six mm thick clear acrylic, plenty strong for the purpose, custom cut and laser engraved.

The reason why these soon to be custom bathroom keys is blue is due to the masking on the front and back of the clear acrylic sheet.

Acrylic is a wonderful material available in a variety of colors, opacities and thicknesses.

The nice thing about CNC laser cutting out the custom bathroom keys from the clear acrylic is that the edges are all flame polished by default, it’s as clear as glass and almost as strong.

Although technically I could easily laser engrave these custom bathroom keys first then laser cut them out, I decided to split the process in two just for fun, there are costs and benefits to doing it either way.

Just to give you an idea, this 1/8″ red acrylic couldn’t look any more different than this quarter inch acrylic but both are acrylic and essentially produced in the same manner.

Acrylic can be rather sharp so that’s why our industrial laser was programmed to make each of the corners rounded, don’t need people cutting themselves on CNCROi.com‘s custom bathroom keys.

Sometimes you see a blue light and other times you don’t, the actual color of the laser beam is invisible or transparent, the blue color comes from the masking filtering the light into a visible spectrum as the acrylic itself is clear.

If you are wondering what’s possible using acrylic, here’s a sign I made using the American flag as inspiration and behind me in all the videos since it’s production.

Looking at the image below, you can see the very fine point of light just as it interacts with the top masking, cutting acrylic, especially clear acrylic, is pretty neat as it’s like magic, you see a flame underneath and it being sliced as the laser moves forward.

The flashes of light you see are when the laser interacts with the grid table underneath, but as this clear acrylic is masked, the localized melting that can occur at that point never makes it on to the acrylic itself.

Because CNCROi.com has both a fiber and CO2 laser source in the same machine, we can actually color change acrylic so for instance, if you wanted a flush engraving using clear acrylic, we could have done that as well.

These custom bathroom keys are incredibly durable, quarter inch acrylic is way stronger than quarter inch MDF or even plywood, and the esthetics of “clear” are fantastic, throw-in the custom engraving and we got a winner!

Now that we are almost done cutting these custom bathroom keys blanks with our industrial laser at CNCROi.com, it will be time very soon to actually laser engrave them with the customer’s branding requirements.

Lots of wonderful products can be made using quarter inch acrylic due to it’s strength and visual appeal.

By the way, the cutting was also custom to the customer’s requirements, meaning they wanted the overall dimensions to be 2.5″ x 7″ using quarter inch and a good sized loop holder, any or all of this could have been individualized or different no problem.

So if you had a female only bathroom and a male only bathroom, we could have engraved just male or female on the key but also taken these custom bathroom keys a step further, making them in a shape of a male or female using totally different materials as well.

Acrylic can be paint filled by the way, it lasts a good amount of time but for applications like this custom bathroom key, it’s best to leave it as-is as it will eventually come off anyways.

Laser engraving acrylic is just as straight forward as cutting them out, I wanted to have a bit of fun so I just did each individually rather than laser engraving all the custom bathroom keys in one shot.

Lasers vaporize a layer of acrylic off, revealing a frosty look which interacts with the light to produce a pretty neat effect when you hold it in your hands, don’t worry, after using it for a while, it will only get better as the acrylic gets used-up.

Another use at CNCROi.com for acrylic is jig production, this jig you see in the video below is still being used to this day, years down the road.

Below is how I shop clear acrylic generally, the customer just has to remove the blue masking underneath and it’s done, I engraved it on the front rather than reversed engraved these custom bathroom keys because either side makes no difference for this application.
