Custom Cardboard Animal Shapes: Designs 0057 – 0074
There is one material that’s cheaper than MDF and that’s paper, in this case, CNCROi.com cuts something a little more resilient, corrugated fiberboard to launch some more custom animal shapes on our e-commerce site.
Custom corrugated fiberboard animal shapes are relatively strong and durable for very brief and short-term use, think temporary custom name badges through to conference handouts where you want to “wow” somebody without breaking the bank.
The nice thing about corrugated fiberboard is that it’s plentiful, weighs close to nothing (think shipping costs) and we can get a very good resolution engraving and cutting it.
In this case, we are cutting custom animal shapes out of the corrugated fiberboard that came with one of our recent supply orders, we always have some of this in stock as we use it for a bunch of applications where something very temporary suits our internal needs.
When corrugated fiberboard is laser engraved, it produces a very dark brown to black result, which makes it great for this application as we can go full speed to produce very nice looking animals full of detail at an affordable price in mass volumes.
The other advantage to corrugated fiberboard is that no sanding is required, it’s just layered paper which makes it great, even for painting and stencil applications – again – limited use.
Other material options, application dependent, for making these custom 2D shapes include Corian, polycarbonate, acrylic, wood, veneer, cement, laminates, metals and anything else you need including ceramic tile engraving.
As we can run our industrial Austrian CNC laser through a database of designs, it means we can also further customize each one of these shapes with a name or any other information you wish, engraved and/or cut realtime.
As you can already see, the contrast provided by engraving corrugated fiberboard is fantastic, it’s as if I used a very fine black marker to create those extra details that will be lost during the cutting process.
Unlike marker though, there is nothing “wet” to degrade the corrugated fiberboard, it’s just burned and has no effect on the durability or flexibility of this for just about any application.

As the corrugated fiberboard custom animals are cut out, you can see how some of them drop, this is because this material isn’t totally flat, but as it’s essentially paper, it doesn’t affect the quality or tolerances when it comes to industrial production.
It’s more efficient to engrave high details and then cut a general outline for these shapes as otherwise, there would be too many small pieces that are prone to breakage. You’ll notice there is also very little flame during production.
That’s because we have industrial extraction and compressed air going all around this corrugated fiberboard so any build-up of gases or flames is tough to spark, especially for a material as thin as this.

Now that these custom animal shapes out of cardboard are finished being cut, you can see how precisely and how sharp they all look. We have well north of 600 dpi, if required, so regardless of application or size, everything comes out precise and to spec.
Taking the waste material away, you can see the animals all look great and regardless of the amount of detail present in the original vector file, everything came out as per spec.
