Custom Corian Signage
Custom Corian signage can be made using hundreds of different color combinations, solid surface material is incredibly durable (indoor and outdoor use) and paint fills wonderfully!
For this specific job, CNCROi.com was to only carve out this piece of Corian, the customer will then do the paint filing (spray paint then sand off where not carved) and set it up to be an indoor waterfall backing.
Before performing the CNC routing that will create the custom Corian signage though, we need to make sure that the surface of the router is dead flat, as a result, it needs to be shaved ever so slightly so it’s totally parallel with the machine.
Why is flatness so important, especially for carving solid surface? Because it’s incredibly hard to make the bottom of the carved area FLAT if it isn’t, you’ll see protruding machine marks everywhere and it’s very hard to sand custom Corian signage after the fact.
Corian also makes for wonderful cement molds!
When it comes to having a flat and clean work surface, nothing beats using the machine itself, it’s like having a self-cleaning bathroom but this is actually realistic and such a joy about having a CNC router at CNCROi.com… wished all my machines self-cleaned their surface area like this!
Corian is a very brittle but resilient material, meaning if you throw it on the ground, it will shatter but it cuts wonderfully using hand and power tools and sands even better, from a matte finish to a clear polish using higher grits.

The size and consistency of the Corian chips you want when making great quality custom Corian signage is between that of rice and snowflakes, any smaller, and the bit will burn-out and any bigger, it will start to skip on you when carving out the design file.
When it comes to your design options, they are endless, just about anything can be carved out of Corian using CNCROi.com‘s CNC router, want a family photo, herd of elephants or whatever, not a problem for us!

What I especially like about paint filling Corian is how well paint bonds to this material, it makes paint filling such a breeze compared to doing the same work using Wood or any other material, including other types of plastics.
If you are wondering what Corian actually is, it’s a solid surface material made from compressed acrylic where the design you see on the surface actually goes all the way through, so it isn’t printed color or marble you see in these photos but this goes all the way through, meaning it doesn’t disappear during sanding.

Making wonderful house number signs using Corian also works great, again, there are endless uses for solid surface material beyond just countertops.
Custom Corian signage can be made into any shape, in this case, CNCROi.com is only carving into the surface but if you wanted this cut as well in the shape of a triangle, circle, oval or whatever you can draw-up, we can cut it, and carve it out if you wish.
The consistency of the Corian chips is like a very heavy wood dust, it doesn’t readily go into the air and thus, it almost looks like sand (but bigger) on the surface of the custom Corian signage that’s being carved.
When laser engraving Corian though, it becomes smoke and the rest of the residue is like a very fine powder, that requires a filtration and extraction system for safety sake.
Carving Corian can be done using our CNC router using a variety of different bit sets for different effects, in addition to our laser, for the same reason… of course, CNCROi.com can also mix and match.
Each machine has their cost and benefits regarding design possibilities.
As for depth, anything goes, most Corian or other solid surface materials are half inch thick, so if you wanted us to go a quarter inch deep into this material, not an issue, but do keep in mind that a lot of carving can weaken the overall Corian piece.

For this specific custom Corian signage, I used a 1/8″ bit, and CNCROi.com was going down a little less than a quarter inch deep, so to alleviate having some bit deflection, I did the entire job in two passes, it doubled production time but lessened the possibility of having some inaccuracies made into the design.

The nice thing about Corian is that it’s plastic so scraps can be put into the recycling bin but rarely do we have much scrap Corian at the shop, even the smallest pieces can be used for other purposes like keychains and even material holders like you see in the picture below, there are a ton of uses for this wonderful material!
Now that the custom Corian signage is finished, you can see how wonderful it came-out, everything is as the design spec called for.
Taking a look at a close-up, you can see the depth achieved on the Corian which will make paint filling a breeze, just spray liberally over the engraving and sand the entire surface, this will remove the paint on the surface of the custom Corian signage but not the parts that are at depth, engraved.
Another picture of the finished piece, this will make for a wonderful water feature for the customer!
