Custom Corner Shelving & Cork Board: CNC Routering 5/8″ MDF

My CNC router is awesome for making custom corner shelving and cork boards, having a ton of tooling options along with incredible precision makes assembly of what comes off my router table a piece of cake.

For this custom furniture project, CNCROi.com used 5/8″ MDF as it machines and finishes very well.

The size of my Thermwood CNC router bed is 5 ft x 10 ft, the sheet that will become custom corner shelving and cork board was 4 ft x 8 ft, hence, although not needed, I blocked-off some areas of my vacuum table for better suction.

When it comes to routering out the various parts that will become two custom pieces of furniture, the CNC machines perfectly follows the design parameters established in the software I used to design this wall mounted cork board and corner shelving.

I’ve been playing with custom shelving for a while using a variety of CNC platforms.

You can see the chip size is perfect on the router table at CNCROi.com, it isn’t a fine dust and it isn’t massive chunks, you generally want something right inbetween.

The custom corner shelving has a outward rounded arc as the back is exactly 90 degrees, this greatly increases the amount of storage space verses going with a straight edge as I made for my son’s toy garage.

The designs that CNCROi.com can be customized to whatever you wish, as they are made to specs that you give to us to produce on your behalf.

The challenge with a rounded design are that it can’t hold as much weight as there is a lot of space and not much supporting things in the middle area, this custom corner shelving will hold only light weight stuff so the design works fine, but if heavier items were required to be held, additional re-enforcement would be required.

The nesting for this custom corner shelving and cork board project is pretty tight, that means as little waste is produced as possible, with waste meaning parts left after cutting out the items I require.

Nesting with rounded objects is a bit more challenging though, as you always end-up with areas where nothing fits so that area becomes something for the fire pit.

Furniture is always fun because no two are alike, unless you want CNCROi.com to make them identical for you!

There is quite a bit of dust produced during the cutting process, most of it is picked-up by our dust system but there is so much produced that there is always some left for pickup after the fact at CNCROi.com.

Notice I also made the pin holes for the custom corner shelving, so yes, they are also adjustable, with only the top middle and bottom being static in order to give strength to the overall furniture design.

Some of my designs never evolve past being digital design concepts though.

After removing everything that won’t become custom corner shelving and cork board, you can gain a better understanding of the pieces involved and their size.

What you see in yellow in the picture below and lines in the above are actually material recesses, this adds a tremendous amount of strength, because the shelves aren’t just supported by nails, but by the interlocking process of the various parts themselves along with glue.

I’ve done a lot of rather odd design stuff thorugh the years, I enjoyed the challenge it brought to me.

If I can do a dry assembly of a piece of furniture without using any glue or other adhesion methods and it goes together well, it means the design is sound at CNCROi.com.

My CNC router also doubles as a paint table, I skim the surface of the spoilboard on a regular basis so this is great because a huge 5 ft x 10 ft table is a premium amount of space at CNCROi.com.

When it comes to making MDF stuff work, I’ve played enough with it though the years to give me a sound understanding of what is and isn’t possible using this material.

I don’t paint inside of the recesses because that’s where the glue and nails will be going, as such, you want MDF edge to edge, not painted edge to painted edge, for proper and stronger adhesion.

I painted all the unpainted edges after actual assembly, below is another dry run, this time with things painted, to make sure there weren’t any other issues I should have to be concerned about before going ahead with glue and nails.

The adjustable shelves are below at CNCROi.com, the nice thing about this is I can always make more if they get damaged, so if you have high-use areas of a piece of furniture, making that part easily replaceable makes sense.

The adjustable shelving on this custom corner shelving are obviously not as solid as the static one, even with four points of contact, the static shelving by contrast is actualy part of the sides and supported all the way through, so they can hold a lot more weight.

Believe it or not, this step stool from 2008 which I designed took me forever!

The custom cork board was cut on another sheet where I was making my son’s Lego parts holder, the biggest differentiator is that the inside is all recesses, as that’s where the cork board will be glued and staples in place at CNCROi.com.

A custom cork board can be made at any size or shape, but keep in mind that the sheets of cork are the limiting factor, as such, you will get seams depending on the size you require it at.
