If I had to pick a career choice that didn’t involve custom fabrication, it would be a firefighter, it’s just such a unique job, similar to joining the army where you live life on a very different track than the vast majority of people out there.

I could seriously spend all day and night standing next to my plasma cutting machine just looking at it work, it’s similar to flattening live edge lumber with my CNC router or fiber etching metal or engraving wood, the process is just so mesmerizing to me even after all these years.

One thing I still have a lot of challenges with when it comes to photographing plasma cutting steel, such as this custom firefighter sign, is the light and UV being shot out from the process is so bright that it really screws with the focusing and contrast that the camera picks-up.

In this blog post, 19 pictures are present, but they were the best out of 70 which were a mix of being out of focus, over or under saturated, the video camera has a bit more give to it.

When it comes to plasma cutting, CNCROi.com has extensive experience cutting metal and if your design is too highly detailed, then we’d just use the waterjet to do the job.

The advantage of waterjet is like the laser, you can make sharp inner corners and have a smaller diameter of material removal, but you pay for it in time and costs of processing, that’s why I tell people that our plasma cutter is more like our router than a waterjet.

Mild steel can be painted using enamel paint, it’s incredibly durable and looks amazing after it cures.

The next step is removing the mill scale off this hot rolled mild steel, that will give it the shinny metal look but wow is it a lot of work.

After extensive angle grinding, you can see the finished result below of this custom firefighter sign, it looks AWESOME and the customer will love having this on their wall.

The nice thing about shinny steel is that it looks different based on the environment and regardless of where it goes, it stands out and matches it.
