Custom Plywood Closet Organizer
I’ve been slowly renovating my home and part of that was building a simple custom plywood closet organizer to replace the typical single wooden bar to hang cloths.
A well-organized closet not only enhances the functionality of your space but also contributes to a sense of calm and order in your daily life, and CNCROi.com can custom fabricate one to any spec you require and ship it right to your door.
While there are numerous pre-made closet organizers available on the market, opting for a custom plywood closet organizer allows you to maximize storage efficiency while catering to your unique needs and preferences, the gap in the above image is where there is no wood BTW on my left over plywood sheet.
Before embarking on any customization project, it’s crucial to assess your needs and the available space in your closet, consider the types of items you want to store, such as clothing, accessories, shoes, or even additional storage containers.
Plywood is great for a wide variety of applications, from mail boxes to furniture.
and of course, kids toys too!
For this custom plywood closet organizer, CNCROi.com used a piece of scrap 3/4″ furniture grade plywood, thus this is why the bottom level was split in two, in order to fit but in hindsight, that was a very good idea regardless as it allowed for a perfect and tight fit that would have been challenging if it would have been only one solid piece.
After you’ve decided the “what will this be used for”, you can then determine the overall dimensions of your closet that CNCROi.com will be fabricating for you, noting any peculiarities like sloped ceilings or protruding architectural features, these are all very important elements and most likely, your closet will be like mine, not particularly square nor level, so expect to paint and patch a little.
Measure the width, height, and depth of your closet accurately, taking note of any obstructions like electrical outlets or ventilation systems, by evaluating your storage requirements and understanding the spatial limitations, you can make informed decisions when CNCROi.com helps you in the designing phase of your custom plywood closet organizer.
Most of the plywood work we do at CNCROi.com is actually signage, but one person’s sign can become another’s closet organizer.
For your custom closet organizer, be sure to consider the following questions to help CNCROi.com make the best closet for you, of course, send sketches and diagrams so we can make a digital proof for review before production:
- How much hanging space do you need for clothing? Will you have long garments like dresses or coats that require extra height?
- Do you need adjustable shelving to accommodate various item sizes?
- Are there specific storage needs for shoes, accessories, or folded items?
- Do you require additional features like drawers, hooks, or pull-out racks?
The next step is to design the layout of your custom plywood closet organizer, this involves determining the optimal configuration of shelves, hanging rods, drawers, and other storage components, be sure to consider how you can maximize vertical space by incorporating double hanging rods or adjustable shelving systems.
Consider factors such as accessibility, ease of use, and aesthetic appeal while ensuring that frequently used items are easily reachable and that there is sufficient space for each category of belongings.
Choosing the right type of plywood is crucial for the durability and aesthetics of your custom closet organizer, this is why CNCROi.com goes towards furniture grade high-quality plywood that is sturdy, dimensionally stable, and resistant to warping or sagging.
I’ve made various smaller items through the years for holding things, surprisingly, this custom show organizer that I just glued together without any nails, actually held-up together for many years before heading for the fire pit.
Consider the thickness of the plywood based on the weight it will support and the spacing between supports, for this custom plywood closet organizer, CNCROi.com used 3/4″ and designed supports mid-way to help prevent sagging while giving the overall structure a lot more strength.
With the design and materials in hand, it’s time for CNCROi.com to start building your custom plywood closet organizer after you’ve approved the digital proof, make sure to give yourself a little wiggle room as well.
Once you get the package in the mail of all the parts you will need made by us based on the digital drawing we worked together on, assemble the components using a combination of screws, nails, or adhesive, depending on the strength and stability required, feel free to reinforce the joints with brackets or corner blocks for added durability.
For this specific project, I wanted only a very simple design, there was no need to go all fancy with lots of drawers, compartments or multiple rods, I will be doing this more fancy work for bedroom closets at the house.
It’s amazing what can be made using plywood, furniture grade plywood also stains incredibly well, so it’s relatively straight-forward when it comes to painting it as well however you like to match your decor.
Keep in mind that your design options are completely endless with CNCROi.com, we can also custom fabricate a custom closet organizer using any material or design specs you need, so if you wanted it to be entirely build using stainless steel or even Corian, yep, we can do that!
Once installed, it’s time to organize your belongings within the newly created storage space, start by grouping similar items together and assign designated areas for each category.
For my custom plywood closet organizer, I actually used storage containers and bins to keep smaller items organized and easily accessible, though you don’t see these in the photos.
If you are wondering why I’m cutting out all the inside parts first then the outside at CNCROi.com for this custom plywood closet organizer, it’s to make sure that nothing moves during production, I’m using screws and a vacuum table to cut this out using a 1/2″ diameter bit.
Of course, CNCROi.com can also mix and match materials, here’s a guitar clock I made a while back that had a mix of metal and wood that came out awesome!
The reason for the holes throughout the flat surfaces is two-fold, the first, to prevent dust and debris from building-up on the shelves, by having holes, gravity will help clean it all and second, to give a little more aesthetic appeal.
Installation was an absolute breeze, yes, this is a very simple custom plywood closet organizer I made at CNCROi.com, but even so, I’ve more then doubled its usefulness, two levels for shoes and the same for various items up top.
I decided not to stain or paint this custom plywood closet organizer, I just want to see how it wears and tears over time, you can see the very snug fit and the dog bones that ensure everything fits in there properly.
