Custom Rescue Dog Ornaments: Christmas Fundraising

We’ve made lots of custom ornaments through the years at CNCROi.com for various causes and functions, but making custom rescue dog ornaments is something that’s extra special as people will keep these year after year for their own Christmas tree ornaments.

The material used for these custom rescue dog ornaments was quarter inch (6 mm) thick plywood at the best grade possible, so knots and defects are at an absolute minimum, and this includes voids that happen between the layers of lower grade plywood which I didn’t want to have for this project.

The reason for using the laser for the entire production run of custom rescue dog ornaments is because it’s a one-step process, if I was to do this project using our CNC router, I would have had to go back over all the Christmas ornaments and perform paint or epoxy filling and wait for it to dry etc…. in this case, it was cut, sand and ship out right away from CNCROi.com.

To add a little more detail and interest to the custom rescue dog ornaments, I decided to cut out the LOVE from the ornaments with the rest being laser engraved, it’s the little things that make a difference and I wanted to make a Christmas ornament that felt great and had some extra things added to it rather than just being a flat piece of plywood.

Laser engraving and cutting is a seamless process, I could technically go from one to the next real time on a project, but don’t for optimal results as mentioned previously.

There aren’t really any limits as to how many of these custom rescue dog ornaments I could make, as long as the material keeps flowing into the machine, it will do the work and output them as needed.

When it comes to using the laser for making these custom rescue dog ornaments, there are always concerns about fire, but using higher grade plywood I’ve found though the years to be a lot less spontaneously flammable than lower grade because it has less defects like voids and “junk” in them that can more easily catch fire.

The plywood used at CNCROi.com for this custom rescue dog ornaments project did have some smoke stains on the surface of them during production but it’s fine, that’s why sanders were invented to clean all of this up.

Live edge wood is a great premium material when it comes to making custom ornaments, especially for the holidays.

After the inside parts of all the Christmas fundraising ornaments are finished, the laser then proceeds to cut them out from the larger piece of quarter inch plywood they came from.

The process of laser engraving creates depth, and the contrast you see is just charcoal, as such, these custom rescue dog ornaments are permanently branded with nothing fading, cracking or peeling off over time.

A process not shown after production is the sanding on the front and back of the custom rescue dog ornaments, this is why no masking was applied as, in this case, sanding was the more efficient process of cleaning these up after laser engraving and cutting.
