Custom Snowboard Wall Art: 1/4″ Plywood

Literally any material can be used for custom wall art, and any design style works great, solid colors or a mix and match approach.

For this specific project, the laser was the best tool for the job because the customer’s name was being cut out of it, the router would produce a similar result but with a very slight inner radius and of course, if the customer wanted this made using steel, the options would have been laser or waterjet or even plasma depending on the size and thicknesses involved.

I’ve made a ton of custom wall art through the years, but this is the first custom snowboard wall art I’ve made at CNCROi.com, so there is really a first for everything.

Laser cutting is a fun process with wood as the contrast is free on the edges, but for this custom snowboard wall art, the customer wanted it painted black, so that really didn’t make a difference, it was the sharpness required in the name and the stenciled font that mattered.

When it comes to wall art, we have the experience to make just about anything you can imagine and odds are, we’ve done it before!

Our laser can cut very thick wood, it just slows down exponentially with thickness and density of the material, this is why, yes, technically, this laser cut actually cut even hard metals like stainless steel, I just wouldn’t want to wait the hundreds of years for this to be accomplished.

Our CNC laser has been a very dependable workhouse through the years, with regular preventative maintenance and parts being replaced as they wear out, it’s been the foundation of CNCROi.com since the very beginning almost a decade ago.

When it comes to laser cutting plywood, there really isn’t that much fire, even when cutting this custom snowboard wall art, there is enough pressure shooting down that the fire is extinguished from the vacuum system so nothing combustible has time to build-up.

For this specific custom snowboard wall art, an image search was performed and the client sent the one they wanted then a few modifications were made to the initial design to suit the project requirements, it’s pretty neat what can be accomplished even when the customers have software and design challenges but still want something custom made for them.

Just to give you an idea of what color does to wood, the video above couldn’t look any different from the initial work.

I really love laser cutting wood, as I did for this custom snowboard wall art, the smell is fantastic, the more “pure” it is, the bette the smell, it makes the shop smell like a camp fire rather than molten metal when laser or plasma cutting metal (or welding) and it’s unlike routing wood where the smell is just the wood itself.

Unlike any other CNC platform at  CNCROi.com, the laser never actually touches the work it’s working on, there is no pushing or pulling through it like a router, no upcurrents like with a waterjet and no heat displacements as you’d get with a plasma cutter.

Once all the inner parts of this custom snowboard wall art were finished, it was time to review the work the laser did and take it into the paint shop to do the following steps to get it to the customer’s spec when they first contacted us about having us make a custom snowboard wall art for them.

Plastic lamacoids make for very neat wall art too, any shapes and engraving can be made onto them.

Generally, I’d apply masking plywood in order to protect it from soot and smoke but as this will be painted anyways, on both sides, there wasn’t much point, the enamel spray paint will make quick work of these surface issues on the custom snowboard wall art.

I was very much in the midst of moving equipment around in the shop while this was being made, had a major move at CNCROi.com where basically the entire shop had to be reorganized inside because of our new massive CNC router.
