Custom Wall Decor: Cherry Stained Pine Signage

This was a fun little job making a dozen custom wall decor plaques that will be used as handouts and gifting purposes.
The first major question you may have is why did we go through the extra effort of staining Pine rather than just doing this job in Cherry to begin with? The answer is simple, easier on machines and a lighter wallet is required to cover all the expenses of making these custom wall decor plaques.
Cherry is a hardwood, it means that laser engraving them would require more time than the same on a softwood like Pine and sanding is way faster on “soft” than on “hard” woods as well.

Another major factor is that Cherry at this size isn’t the easiest to come by but for Pine, this size is plentiful and cost effective by comparison, no specialty hardwood store markups to deal with for these custom wall decor signs.

Although the writing on all of these signs is the same, they can be personalized however you wish, with different words or even addressed to specific people.

You will notice some surface defects on this Pine, don’t worry, CNCROi.com made some extras for just this reason and we can use either side of the Pine for the sign, so two issues solve themselves in a production setting.

Originally, I was going to laser cut out these custom wall decor Cherry stained Pine signs which is why I’m working off a full sheet rather than smaller bits that I then cut afterwards.
But then I realized that as these will be stained, you won’t be able to tell the difference anyways and adhesion onto charcoal isn’t the best for stain regardless, so that’s why I ended-up just cutting my reference lines on these custom wall decor plaques.
Wall decor can be customized however you like, font through design, outlines and anything else you can imagine.
If I would have realized this change in decision earlier, I would have cut them all out on the table saw first then laser engraved but at the end of the day, it was just more efficient to continue on the original plan than to deviate when everything was already set-up and ready to go at CNCROi.com for these signs.
You will notice in the above picture that the grain does follow in both the surface of the Pine and the engraving as well, unlike our CNC router, the laser works with the wood when removing material rather than a specific offset when it comes to subtractive production.
You will also notice that I dodged the bigger knots, they can be trouble with custom wall decor signage like this as this size, they tend to fall out so I just laser engraved and made my reference points around them.

Working off a full sheet is great, the laser loves cutting this stuff and our powerful extraction system quickly takes care of any smoke generated during the cutting process.

Laser engraving at CNCROi.com is done on a fantastic machine that allows us to feed projects through, meaning we can handle jobs that are a lot bigger than the original footprint of our laser machine.
CNCROi.com also has very functional wall decor in the shop, for instance, a huge ruler that we use to quickly measure the height of our live edge logs and planks.
After all the signs were engraved and referenced on our CNC laser, it was time to cut them out using our table saw.
Definitely not the most efficient steps but at the end of the day, it didn’t really matter, each sign is still looking fantastic after being stained to perfection.
MDF is also a wonderful material to work with when it comes to wall decor options, it paints very well and looks great in any light as long as you don’t put it in a high humidity area or outside.
The staining process is pretty simple, apply stain, let it sink in, then remove excess, on all surfaces, front, back and sides of these custom wall decor plaques.
My CNC router was free that day so I used the table as my holder for all these stained plaques, there is no spray involved, just hand brush, so there was no worries about contaminating the MDF surface of the sacrificial board on my router.
