Custom Wood Name Tag Options
Custom wood name tag options are as endless as the wood species you want them made from and the design ideas you have in mind for CNCROi.com to make for you.
Custom wood name tag species options include Oak, Maple, Walnut, Sycamore, Pine and so forth, the one thing to keep in mind is that for longevity, hardwoods are better than softwoods.
Having custom wood name tag designed is really no different than a lamacoid, metal or other materials CNCROi.com can make a custom name tag out of, for hardwoods, the resolution is essentially the same as anything else as well but for softwoods, it’s hit and miss.
The design options as a result are limitless, any font, shape, size or whatever design variations you come-up with will most likely look totally fine on a wood name tag, regardless of quantity or finishing options.
To save myself a lot of very precise sanding, when it comes to making hardwood custom wood name tags, I prefer to mask them, it does take time to remove it, especially with very tight designs but it’s a pittance compared to trying to sand a hardwood name tag with lots of precise details to work around.

Although these are not name tags, it just shows you how extensive your design options can be, CNCROi.com is limited only by your imagination and budget.
For this custom wood name tag, I used plywood, you can tell it’s plywood just from the engraving texture produced, it’s pretty consistent, sort of like an MDF name tag but with larger and more pronounced features.
Of course, the texture produced with plywood name tags isn’t the same as that produced by an Oak or Maple name tag, where natural wood grain is the cause verses just scrap wood that’s just one level up from MDF.

Plywood is a wonderful material for a wide variety of projects, from furniture to smaller items to hang on the wall, beyond just wood name badges.
When it comes to laser engraving and cutting a custom wood name tag, the process is generally the same regardless of the wood species or wood type where a design is burned into the base wood type material.
The times are also generally the same with one caveat, some woods require multiple passes to achieve a darker result, this adds a lot of cost to the overall result with a negligible value add so most of the time, this isn’t done.

As you saw from the Oak name badge, going another round does darken it, but the extra cost for the customer is generally not required or wanted.
The file type that comes out best when it comes to making custom wood tags is a black and white vector with a line indicating the cut, vectors are important because unlike bitmaps (JPG, GIF… ), they do not lose resolutions when scaled and are always sharp.
CNCROi.com has an amazing Austrian wide-format industrial laser, it’s specs are second to none which is why we produce such fantastic results for our customers but at the end of the day, if you send us a garbage image, it will produce garbage results.

I always have lots of plywood in the shop, it’s just a great material to use for jigs through signage.
The plywood name tag you see above still has masking on it, that’s what the white surface is indicating, you can see the smoke stains and burning, the good thing is that this is found on the masking, it doesn’t make its way to the underlying plywood or other material we use with masking.
Just to give you an idea of other project possibilities using wood in general and the results, CNCROi.com also makes a wide variety of custom stamps, yes, we can make novel wooden stamps and they work pretty darn well!

Now for the custom Oak name tag, you’ll notice right away it has a wood grain following from the non-engraved areas to the engraved ones, it’s very much pronounced and this is a great way to add a lot of individuality to each custom wood name tag by default.
For CNCROi.com, the wood species that we’ve found work best are the lighter woods, like Maple, Sycamore and even Ash, the darker the wood, the harder it is to produce a strong contrast as we are going dark surface to dark laser engraving.
Oak is probably the darkest wood I’d suggest when it comes to making a custom wood name tag, it’s a great material, ultra-durable and looks great in any light, especially when finished.

Wood is an endlessly variable product, each species brings something else to the table, and they can also be mixed and matched using inlays and other woodworking techniques.
For me, I really like the look and feel of Oak name tags, it has a strong grain pattern and vibrant contrast, especially when laser engraved multiple times to produce a nice chocolate like contrast.
CNCROi.com has extensive experience and inventories of real wood, we make custom live edge furniture and wall plaques of all types, so it comes in handy for custom corporate wooden name tags to be able to offer a wide variety of options for this specific application as well.

Butternut is a great material, Ash and Maple all look great, it all depends on what you are trying to achieve using your custom wood name tag.
The reason why CNCROi.com engraves first then cuts custom wood name tags because we don’t want it to move during production, the longer something is part of a larger piece, the less likely it is to move and thus produce precision errors in the final product.
Oak is a wonderful material but not the only option when it comes to making custom name badges and name tags, Cherry is also a wonderful material, each wood species produces a different contrasting profile but this can also vary between different grain patterns and wood densities in the wood itself.
On a totally unrelated note, he’s what solid Oak dominos look like compared to solid Oak name tags, there are some similarities and differences from each one.

But for real wood name tags, finishing really makes the grain and contrast pop, so it’s something I generally do depending on the application.
Here you can see the contrast and different laser results between a plywood name tag on the left and the Oak name tag on the right, even with the masking left on upon the top image, it’s a pretty big difference just from the grain, and this continues on for the grain in the bottom where the surface grain follows through into the engraving.
Adding a sealant onto the custom wood name tag makes both of these name badges pop but on the hardwood, due to the natural propensity of the grain to drink it in, the contrast is even more brilliant.
Taking a look at the close up on these two wooden name tags, left plywood, right Oak, you can see how much of an effect the grain has on the Oak and just how absent, though a different look all together, the plywood name badge gives by comparison.
Just for fun, I thew-in a MDF name tag on the far left for added comparisons, it’s a cheaper material than the other two and for some applications, a superior choice when it comes to picking or making something that needs a bit more contrast and consistency.
