Live Edge Cherry: Branding Extra Long Plank

Live edge Cherry branding using CNCROi.com‘s industrial wide-format Austrian CNC laser is possible even on the longest and widest of planks.

For this project, the logo was to be placed dead center of the live edge Cherry plan that measures almost 50 inches long!

The bed size of our Austrian laser is up to 41 inches x 26 inches, so you can see there is a problem right off the bat if the customer wants something engraved right in the center of it at the scale they wanted their live edge Cherry branding to be.

Luckily, when I started CNCROi.com, I KNEW this would happen every once in a while and as a result, this poses absolutely no problem for us.

Why?

Because CNCROi.com bought a CNC laser that allows for pass-through, meaning I can feed far larger pieces than my “limited” bed size in this case for the live edge Cherry branding would have allowed otherwise.

Basically, it requires taking the front door of our awesome CNC laser down and removing the back panel, nothing is affected doing this by the way, same speed, same quality and same extraction power (very important).

CNCROi.com has laser engraved pretty big wooden signage but due to NDA, I can’t show you guys pics or video, but the results were amazing on the real Oak and the customer was very happy at how seamless the whole process was and is when it comes to live edge branding onto any species in extra-large size.

CNCROi.com has done custom branding onto live edge board across a whole range of species, both hardwood and soft, on plastics through glass.

For the custom live edge Cherry branding, the process is the same with pretty much any other wood, high-resolution, repeatable results and a keen eye to make sure everything looks amazing!

The depth on this live edge Cherry branding is a bit more than 1/8″ or 3 mm, it doesn’t need to be deep, just enough to allow the customer to sand it at their end (they wish to finish it themselves with varnish as well).

Although CNCROi.com has a full workshop with lots of tooling to go with that, I fully appreciate customers wanting to add their own little touch and finishes to the work we do, we take as much pride and craftmanship into what we do as they for their business.

When it comes to custom CNC laser engraving Cherry or other hard woods like Maple or Oak, special care must be taken as these boards, especially when they are live edge a few inches thick, are pretty heavy and although they aren’t going anywhere no matter how much compressed air and vacuum we have on the piece during production, they can be easily dented.

We’ve done lots of custom live edge work, from basswood memorial plaques and wall signage through to intricate ornaments for the holiday season using veneers.

I started CNCROi.com over four years ago now and I never get tired of watching our amazing Austrian CNC laser doing its work, there is always something new to learn and evaluation of the results to see how things can be done better next time.

Just to show you how much room we still have on our Austrian laser when it came to live edge Cherry branding, this piece could have been up to 13 inches thick, infinite length and over 40 inches wide and that logo in the center wouldn’t have been any more work after setting it up.

The customer added marks on the wood for positioning, live edge can be a little tricky because there is nothing straight on it, the grain meanders as much as the edges so finding the center point has a little guessing involved.
