Metal House Number Sign: Plasma Cut Steel

A metal house number sign by CNCROi.com can be cut out of any thickness you want but for this specific case, we used 12 Ga, 2.7 mm 7/64″ Hot Rolled Mild Steel.

Our house number signs are custom to your spec, you tell us the material, font, design options etc… and we make it for you and ship to your door.

Ever since I got this new toy about a month ago, I’ve been very impressed with how seamless it cuts through metal, the waterjet is also amazing but it’s slow by comparison and doesn’t produce awesome sparks unless we are cutting titanium with it.

I have a huge fan working while cutting this metal house number sign but as you can see, it still can’t keep-up with the amount of metal being instantly vaporized by CNCROi.com‘s CNC plasma cutter, so I will be doubling it up to handle more exhaust flow.

Unlike my previous steel house number sign, same gauge, type and thickness as this one currently being cut, this one needed support material for both the 4 and the 9 to prevent them from falling out.

It was also made a little smaller to account for the customer’s smaller footprint, I went a bit overboard with the sizing of my custom metal house number sign but nobody can ever tell me that they can’t find my address as a result.

I just love the sparks and the fire produced when cutting metal in the shop using my CNC plasma cutter, it just makes it so much fun to watch and the results are spectacular with no dross anywhere, making clean-up easy and fun with the angle grinder.

For comparison, here’s a slightly thinner mild steel being CNC waterjet cut, no sparks, just lots of mud but what you lose in speed you gain in sharpness, I can’t make sharp inner corners with my CNC plasma cutter but I can with the waterjet!

Regardless of the process used, spray paint with enamel paint is a great way to add color to a custom fabricated metal house number sign or anything else out of metal, powder coating is also available but personally, I like the ease and speed (and budget) of just spraying it with enamel.

The reason for the support material in this custom metal house number sign is to prevent the inner parts from falling out, generally, I use the same guide as I do with stencils, have at least 3 mm or 1/8″ of material – yes CNCROi.com can go a lot tighter than that – but a general rule of thumb is to give a sign too much strength rather than not enough.

For this job, it’s obvious that there is support material and it makes for a wonderful accent to the finished metal house number sign as well.

But this process isn’t only used for big signs like this, we also do very tight and highly detailed signs as well using metal, for that, the CNC waterjet is the better tool as the diameter of the actual cut is so thin, unlike our CNC plasma.

Of course, CNCROi.com isn’t limited to paper, we can make custom house number signs or any type of stencil using far thinner material as well, like paper!

Or using material like plywood does a wonderful job as well.

Having a diversity of offerings allows us to do what you want, when you want it, on budget because we aren’t trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, we have round pegs too for a far better fit.

When it comes to CNC plasma cutting this custom metal house number sign, the process is relatively simple, CNCROi.com generates a digital file based on the customer’s wants, once approved, we cut it out using the best technology for that given design and then we clean and ship it out.

If you want CNCROi.com to paint your sign, no problem, we can ship it out finished, but if you want to do this yourself, again, no problem, put a little elbow grease at your end to save on money and gain a bit more pride in doing the project all by yourself with our help.

The flexibility in material, process and design is as infinite as your budget and timeline allows.

You can now see all the inside parts are just about cut out of the mild steel house number sign we are making with the CNC plasma cutter, the reason for cutting the inside first then the outside is to prevent movement, CNCROi.com wants everything perfect, so the longer everything is part of a sheet, the higher the precision of the finished product.

You’ll see this pattern of inside then outside repeated for just about every machine we have in the shop, inside then outside cuts.

If you look at these pictures of the metal house number sign being cut in sequence, you can see a gradual smoke build-up around, above and below the piece that’s being cut, this is vaporized metal particulate.

If you are wondering why the sparks from the CNC plasma cutting are getting so much distance, it’s because they are being pushed by air, we have 120 PSI of air shooting down from the torch along with the plasma arc, so anything that’s vaporized instantly that doesn’t go into the bottom of the CNC plasma and out the door goes flying in every other direction.

Unlike a grinding wheel, there are no moving parts here, so it’s just air pushing rather than centrifugal force rotating the particles of metal away from the mild steel work piece.
