Custom Acknowledgement Plaque: Silt Corian
We’ll make a custom acknowledgement plaque using silt corian at CNCROi.com today.
When it comes to plaques, we can make them at any size, shape or material, but today the customer wanted something that fit previously made plaques and silt corian was the best fit.
The bit above gave the custom acknowledgement plaque a beveled edge while the one below cut it out of the half inch Corian.
Corian is basically compressed acrylic, as such, when you router it into snowflakes, it gets EVERYWHERE, it’s almost as bad as cutting foam at CNCROi.com but the pieces are bigger.
Corian can be machined into big signs as well as small signs, it’s quite a versatile material we use for a wide variety of projects for our customers.
We’ve made lots of plaques through the years at CNCROi.com, the process is basically the same time and again, just the information on it and the material, thus the process of creating it, changes depending on the design spec of the customer.
The custom acknowledgement plaque is now finished the cutting process, creating the bevel at the same time as the rest of the plaque saves a lot of time and creates a more consistent look – I’ve grown quite fond of doing things this way.
Corian is a very heavy material, as such, with a powerful vacuum system, it stays down very well and what’s even better is that this material is dead-flat, so there is no extra machining required on the bottom, like I do with my SandboxRanch.com banks.
Another use for Corian that CNCROi.com makes is as molds, cement doesn’t stick to it, which is perfect for some of our customers.
After the masking is applied, the custom acknowledgement plaque that we CNC routed into shape is now lasered, it produces a cleaner result with a far higher resolution than any CNC router could achieve, though the process is SLOW.
This custom acknowledgement plaque has a lot of names on it using a very fine font at a small point size, as such, lasering it was an absolute perfect fit, it will then be paint filled at CNCROi.com before shipping it out to the customer.
CNCROi.com has worked on some huge Corian projects in the past and has another one on the docket to start in a few days that will require 1″ thick Corian across many custom acknowledgement plaques, but whether we make one or a thousand, the quality and precision is always the same.
The major advantage of CNC machines is that unlike humans, they are perfectly fine doing extremely fine work over and over again without getting bored, requiring a lunch break or losing focus.
Having the right equipment at CNCROi.com allows us to really make some amazing custom Corian plaques!
You can tell immediately when some depth is achieved on this custom acknowledgement plaque, the shadows give it away, that’s why you see the darker engraving on the second pass, the first and second pass are going the same speed and power, but after the surface is broken, that’s when the real depth is created.
The laser is doing a few things at the same time for this custom acknowledgement plaque, first, it’s vaporizing a layer of plastic off the surface, second, it’s excavating into the plastic to create a little depth and most importantly, the third thing is that it’s creating a permanently branded Corian plaque whose information will not fade, crack or peel overtime.
CNCROi.com can literally engrave ANYTHING into Corian and paint fill it afterwards if required by the project, so you aren’t stuck using ONLY text with your own custom acknowledgement plaque.
Corian is a very solid material, though it can be brittle, as such, when you hang it on a wall, you want to do so in a very solid matter so it doesn’t fall on the ground where it most likely would shatter from the fall, just like most acrylics would do.
Corian is available in a lot of different colors, add in paint filling, and your branding options are endless with CNCROi.com.
What always blows me away at CNCROi.com, regardless of the material or project at hand, is that the laser can go back over parts already engraved AGAIN and AGAIN and always hit the same spots, our laser is accurate within 5 nanometers and project like this, you really can’t afford to have any bigger of a repeatable deviation.
After the laser engraving is done at CNCROi.com on this custom acknowledgement plaque, I check it over to make sure the depth required is achieved throughout the plaque and there are no imperfections, with Corian, there aren’t any material issues but plaques made out of wood, sometimes a knot is exactly in the wrong place so that needs fixing.
You can really appreciation the absolute sharpness of the results CNCROi.com‘s laser produces, look at the image below, this simply wouldn’t be possible any other way on this custom acknowledgement plaque.
Of course, we also use Corian for completely unrelated to signage applications, it makes for wonderful hold down widgets which you see at CNCROi.com being used all the time.
There is already a masking applied to the surface before the laser work was started on this custom acknowledgement plaque, but after the laser engraving process, I mask the rest of the plaque so that I can paint fill it without worrying about getting any of that paint elsewhere on it.
I’ve tried MANY methods of paint filling through the years at CNCROi.com, the best I’ve found was spray paint, it spreads evenly, cures rather quickly and fills in the laser engraving rather well.
Spray painting this custom acknowledgement plaque was done in multiple passes of course, at different angles and a few spot sprays to make sure EVERYTHING was properly filled on this custom acknowledgement plaque.
Removing the masking, you can see how relatively clean the finished custom acknowledgement plaque is looking, there is a little bleed here and there but I have to sand the surface of this plaque anyways, and that will clean that up as well.
The finished plaque looks great!
