Emu Animal Shapes: 1/8″ 3 mm MDF

Let’s make hundreds of emu animal shapes using 1/8″ 3 mm MDF at CNCROi.com using our CNC laser.

Animals are lots of fun to laser cut, in this case, it was hundreds of emu animal shapes for a client who just loves this flightless bird, the material fit their budget and application perfectly so it was just a matter of nesting them properly for as little material wastage as possible and jump right into production!

One of the challenges that comes with making hundreds of anything is nesting, you want everything to come out great but also want to waste as little material as possible, luckily for this project making hundreds of emu animal shapes, everything was being cut-out which makes things more efficient nesting wise than when engraving is occurring.

You’ll notice that the word EMU is cut out of each emu, it’s a play on words as they have a very distinctive shape but cutting it out is more cost effective and made way more sense than engraving these emu animal shapes because these are slated to be painted, as such, engraving might be covered with paint which makes it a redundant process but cutting through will not.

For this specific job, all the emu animal shapes were the same, but if you wanted each of them to be completely different, shape, size and even design, it really makes no difference to CNCROi.com, as each is made one at a time essentially anyways.

Do keep in mind that at the end of the day, it’s the overall line length being cut that affects your budget, so that’s why these emu animal shapes are feathery, it would have doubled production costs and really, most people wouldn’t notice this anyways.

Acrylic can be had in a ton of different colors, opacities and thicknesses, it’s really a fantastic material for a huge variety of applications, just not this specific production run.

I gave these emu animal shapes tons of space around them, as you can see, just to make sure the smoke pattern front and back was evenly distributed, having things more packed would have introduced smoke patches where basically one layer of smoke is added upon by another layer of smoke by cutting right next to another emu shape.

MDF is a material that CNCROi.com uses a lot of in the shop, it’s very cost effective, plentiful and paints amazing.

Plywood does add another dimension though, a lot more strength, but for most applications, this really makes very little difference.
