Metal Towel Hanger: Custom CNC Plasma Cut Mild Steel

It’s great being able to make my own items, today it’s a custom metal towel hanger for my upcoming son.

I made this custom metal towel hanger using 12 ga 2.7 mm or 7/64″ mild steel and ended-up using just a clear enamel coat on it to prevent it from rusting.

Now that Simon’s custom metal towel hanger is finished, you can see how great it looks, the purpose of the round circles in the bottom is to remove material to make bending it to shape manually easier.

Generally you want to bend HOT metal but my torch was out of gas, so my solution was to make holes and try bending the mild steel COLD, of course, some of it cracked or broke.

Before getting to bending though, I wanted to clean-up the surface of it and before that, just double check the design came out as planned.

One thing I forgot to review on this custom metal towel hanger was to make sure the stencil font was a true stencil font, you can see the inside of the “e” is missing, as such, it isn’t as clear as it should be but lesson learned.

You can see the edge has almost no dross, I just ran the angle grinder over the front and back to remove any little bit of dross on the edge to be easily removed so that this custom metal towel hanger layed flat against the door backing.

Bending manually really isn’t the best way to do this, especially without any heating, but as this was for personal use, I just pushed through for efficiency.

Of course, one of the hooks cracked and broke, again, cold bending metal is not the best method to bend metal, as such, I had to pull out the MIG welder and just weld it back on, the custom metal towel hanger hook is just as strong as the others.

You can see a close-up of the hook, again, because I manually bend it all with a pipe wrench and pliers, they are all a bit different but in the future, I’d use my brake and heating to make them all bend at the same identical angle.

The finished custom metal towel hanger, after a clear coat of enamel, looks fantastic, it weighs a few pounds and I really love the functionality of this and can’t wait to use it in a few months.

Looking at a close-up, you can see the mild steel does look good, I didn’t remove the mill scale, I just like the look and I don’t have to worry about rust either.
