Custom Steel Hangers: CNC Plasma Cut

I wanted to see how strong custom steel hangers are compared to any other hanger type I’ve made at CNCROi.com in the past… it’s wickedly strong and durable – will be making many more for myself!

These custom steel hangers are made using hot rolled mild steel measuring 12 ga, 1/8″ or 3 mm thick with the bigger one being 17.5″ long, the prototype is about half that.

As CNCROi.com is fabricating these custom steel hangers in-house, it means we can design and optimize any aspect of them with a very quick turnaround right to your retail, wholesale, industrial or other usage very fast.

The above custom steel hanger is actually a prototype, I wasn’t sure what the strength and esthetics of this product would be but I was very pleasantly surprised as it was even beyond my own expectations.

Though not strictly a hanger, I have found this for my Son has been incredibly useful, so much in fact, I plan to make one for the office and the shop, just love using wall hung hangers.

So, after the prototype custom steel hanger was made, it was time to make the next one full size, it’s cheaper in material and resources to do a smaller prototype first, work out the design kinks.

The same level of cutting enthusiasm was displayed by CNCROi.com‘s CNC plasma cutter, it really enjoys slicing metal… and it does a damn fine job of it as well for customers across North America and the Caribbean/Europe.

When it comes to plasma cutting, CNCROi.com can cut up to an inch and a half thick steel no problem using our PowerMax85 by Hypertherm, it’s a wonderful cutter that I really enjoy using for custom metal fabrication.

These custom hangers lasted quite a while, I still have a few at home that we use for heavy jackets etc… but again, steel beats these hands-down… and yes, you can get the same design with metal as you can with any other material.

After the inside parts of these custom steel hangers is done, the machine then cuts the outline, liberating the hanger from the steel from which it came.

In the above, you can see the smoke generated instantly vaporizing mild steel, CNCROi.com has a powerful downdraft table, so most of this is sucked right down into the machine and out of the shop.

For both of these custom steel hangers jobs, I used some scrap metal I had in the shop left over from other jobs, at this point, it isn’t an efficient production method but for prototyping, it’s perfect and best of all, yet again, a very cost effective and environmentally friendly way to work out design kinks.

The results right after plasma cutting this bigger custom steel hanger is fantastic, you can see it’s almost ready for use immediately, of course, this will be cleaned-up with the angle grinder to remove the little dross visible on the edges.

These custom acrylic hangers are still in use today, this video is a few years old… but for retail or non-personal use, I’d suggest steel all the way!

For this test, I also decided to rubberize the custom steel hanger, the bigger one that looks black is the one coated with rubber, the one in front of it is the “original” prototype at a smaller scale.

I never rubberized or vulcanized a metal job before so my idea behind this is to test it out myself over the next few weeks or months to see how durable the process is in real life use.

Regardless, these are really the most awesome custom hangers I’ve ever made, sure you can buy cheap plastic hangers for pennies on the dollars, but why not get them made by CNCROi.com that will literally last a lifetime and that you can pass on in your will to the next generations!
